On the one hand, adhering to traditions helps maintain a sense of shared identity, which is crucial for societal harmony. Traditions remind people that they are part of a long-standing history, promoting a sense of belonging and unity. For example, in the United States, the celebration of Thanksgiving strengthens national identity by bringing families together to honor their shared past. Furthermore, following traditions provides a stable foundation for future generations. On the other hand, young people should have the freedom to express their individuality, including challenging outdated customs. Each generation has its unique voice, and today’s youth should not be constrained by the past. For instance, young activists have led movements for social change, such as legalizing same-sex marriage and advocating for gender equality, demonstrating their desire to align society with modern values. Moreover, some traditions may be oppressive or obsolete in today’s context. Vietnam’s history of gender imbalance, for instance, has been largely overcome due to growing awareness of women’s rights, making such traditions no longer relevant.
In my opinion, while traditions can offer a sense of stability, young people should be free to make their own choices and challenge customs that no longer serve them or society.
