In 2001, there were 33,577 local research students, a number which rose slightly to 39,488 by 2010. The number of international research students saw a dramatic increase, nearly tripling from over 5,000 in 2001 to almost 14,600 in 2010. Consequently, the total number of research students in Australian universities grew by around 15,000 during this period.

Regarding gender distribution, the percentages of male and female local research students remained equal in both surveyed years. In contrast, the gender distribution among international students shifted. In 2001, male international students made up 9% of the total, more than double the 4% of female students. By 2010, the proportion of female international students increased to 15%, surpassing the 12% of male international students.
