    • Main idea 2: Globalization
      • Supporting idea: The rise of globalization has made it easier for students to study abroad, which has led to increased competition among universities to attract international students.
      • Example: My niece - Emma, a high school graduate from a small town in Danang, embraced the opportunities of globalization, applying to universities worldwide driven by her motivation to experience diverse cultures and gain a broader perspective on her chosen field of study.

        • This is because universities strive to attract and retain the best students and faculty. 
        • It can also promote innovation in teaching and research, as institutions compete to stay ahead of their peers.
      • Example: In response to heightened global competition, the University of Helsinki in Finland strategically elevated its standards and quality of education, achieving leadership status in various academic disciplines through investments in facilities, recruitment of top-tier faculty, and the creation of a dynamic learning environment.
    • Main idea: On the other hand, increased competition can also have negative consequences.
      • Supporting idea:  
        • It can create a stressful and hyper-competitive environment for students, as well as perpetuate disparities in access to higher education for disadvantaged groups who may not have the same resources or opportunities to compete.
        • Competition can also result in universities prioritizing rankings and funding over educational quality and the needs of students, potentially leading to a narrow focus on specific areas of research or neglecting the development of certain academic programs or disciplines.
