This is because the relentless pursuit of luxury goods and possessions often diminishes appreciation for existing possessions and nurtures discontentment. For example, in societies with rising living standards, individuals often equate success and status with material possessions, fueling an insatiable desire for more, regardless of genuine needs or financial constraints. Furthermore, the demanding nature of high economic growth can lead to long working hours, depriving parents of valuable time with their children and potentially exposing them to negative influences. In New York City, for instance, African-American children may be susceptible to involvement in criminal activities due to parental preoccupation with work affairs.
In conclusion, while economic development undoubtedly brings numerous benefits such as poverty reduction and improved access to education, it also poses challenges such as the erosion of traditional values and the proliferation of materialism.
