    • Main idea 2: Higher earnings confined to a few hands increases inequality in the society because this gives rise to feelings like jealousy and hatred.

        • Many studies show that countries with a narrower income gap often have lower poverty and crime rates than those experiencing growing economic inequality.
      • Example: For instance, in the United States, the top 1% of earners have seen their incomes grow by over 200% since 1979, while the bottom 90% experienced less than 25% growth, coinciding with increased social tensions and crime rates in urban areas. In contrast, Sweden's policies of progressive taxation and strong social welfare have led to lower poverty and crime rates, mitigating feelings of jealousy and hatred through a more equitable distribution of wealth.
